Caney Creek Waterfalls (High Falls)

On the edge of the Sipsey Wilderness, this is a great warm weather hike for younger Scouts or those not up to long distance hiking.

Caney Creek Waterfalls (High Falls)

This is a little known hiking destination. It's not on the Sipsey maps, and there are no signs to direct you to this spot.

This hike starts in an unmarked parking area, and winds up and down a one mile long path that starts as a closed gravel road, then turns to sand, then just a trail. The trail descends about 100' into a canyon at the end, where Cany Creek spills over high rocks into a greta swimming hole below. Our BSA Lifeguard estimated the water temperature to be about 65 degrees (that's cold).

At its deepest point, the swimming hole is chest deep on an average 15 year old. There are trails that lead to the top, where hikers can sit in the upper part of the actual falls. This point is about 60' above the swimming hole.

There is another set of falls (Low Falls) about 3/4 of a mile further downstream. We didn't visit them, but there are pictures of the low falls on the website of the Sipsey Wilderness Hiking Club.

Larry Barkley of the SWHC provided these directions to Caney Creek:

From east: Go to Double Springs, AL, then go north on Hwy 33 for 3 miles. Turn left on CR 2. Go 3.7 miles to a small, unmarked parking place on the right, just past mailbox 9916.

From west: Take Hwy 195 from Haleyville. A hlaf mile past Ashridge, look for CR 2 on your left. Turn left, and the small parking spot is about 1.5 miles on the left.

Either way, when you arrive, there is a pipe gate across the old road, with a "road closed" sign on it.

Parking: 34 14.128N, 087 26.058W

High Falls: 34 14.744N, 087 26.007W
