Distance: 30 miles

This YMCA camp has been around a long time. It has developed areas for tent and camper camping, a raised dining hall, and a large field in the back for more primitive camping.

There's also a gathering area right on the banks of the Tombigbee River, which can be a very scenic place for a Saturday night "council ring".

Below: Two scouts visit on the banks of the Tombigbee at Camp Henry Pratt in early 2005.

This is not a "general public" camping area, so scout units will need to call ahead and arrange permission to camp at Camp Henry Pratt. This is a great place for larger groups, scout troops, etc. Family camping is probably not common here. Call for details before making plans.

Camp Henry Pratt has been around a long, long time. I know T45 and T14 used to go camping there back in the 1950's. It's now a YMCA camp, and can be used by groups with permission from the YMCA. The PAC had a camporee there in Spring, 2005.

The camp is on the banks of the Tombigbee River. There are numerous cabins, a really nice dining hall, and an outdoor chapel area. There's lots of grassy land in the back of the camp for tent camping. The most common comment I heard while there last trip was "What a nice place; I never knew this was here." :!:

To reach Camp Hentry Pratt from Starkville, take Highway 45 Alt south to Crawford. As soon as you go under the railroad bridge in Crawford, take the next left. This road leads you to Highway 45. Go left (north) on Highway 45, and as soon as the highway becomes four lane, take the next right hand road (Hwy 792). There are no signs at the turn. About four or five miles down Highway 792, you'll see Weyerhauser on the left. About a mile past Weyerhauser, 792 makes a sharp right, but go straight ahead (this will now be gravel). You'll start seeing signs that say Camp Henry Pratt.

To check on using this camp, contact the YMCA office in Columbus, 662-328-7696.

Crappie fishing in the Tombigbee is a good activity.
