Cahaba River Basic Information

I've canoed the Cahaba River for over 25 years, and it's probably one of the best kept secrets in Alabama. My favorite old outfitter, Bulldog Bend Canoes, is no longer in business, so I don't have an outfitter yet I can recommend.

There are at least 16 public put-in/take-out spots along the river, and you can find the list of these at this link:

The Cahaba River Society is a non-profit group that takes a real interest in the preservation of the River. Their website offers a virtual canoe trip. Visit them here:

The river points are located near West Blocton and Centreville, Alabama, between Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. Second year Webelos and older Scouts should be able to make this trip without any problem, as long as they have appropriate adult supervision with the appropriate Safety Afloat training.

This is a free flowing river, but the water level does change during the course of the year. Please contact the Cahaba River Society for river conditions before making the trip.

Photos and stories about this river are solicited.
